1)    What is Far Infrared Heat?

Far Infrared Heat is a frequency of light naturally emitted from the sun. The term 'far' refers to a particular band of light within the infrared spectrum. The most beneficial frequency of infrared light lies between 5-15 microns, especially around 9 microns, which is the same frequency that our own bodies emit infrared heat. Infrared heat is extremely safe. No harmful UV rays are emitted by the sauna heaters.

The sun is the principal source of radiant energy that we all enjoy on sunny days. The infrared heat in a infrared sauna is just like the heat from our sun, or that which our own bodies produce as it burns energy to keep us warm.

2) Far infrared sauna vs. Conventional sauna

Temperature

- Conventional saunas work by heating the air via hot coals or an electric element, which may use water to product steam. These style of saunas are generally much hotter (150-200F) and are very difficult to tolerate for more than a few minutes.
- Infrared saunas use ceramic heaters, which when heated emit infrared light. Infrared light only heats objects on contact, so very little of the energy from the heaters is wasted, with almost 90% being absorbed by the body. Infrared saunas generally only reach 130-150 F and are therefore much easier to tolerate. Because of the more tolerable temperature, a longer more beneficial sweat is achieved

Penetration

- Conventional saunas heat only the surface of the skin and very slowly penetrate into the body.
- Infrared light penetrates the surface of the skin by about 1.5 inches. This allows the fat cells below the skin (adipose tissue) to be heated. This has a very  detoxifying effect on the body, encouraging fat cells to let go toxins that are stored in this fatty layer. The infrared light also benefits your body's lymphatic system, helping it to purge toxins.

 5) Contraindications for use of Infrared Sauna Therapy:

DO NOT use the sauna if

·     You are pregnant or suspect you might be. When pregnant, it is recommended to discontinue use of infrared saunas immediately

·     You are a Hemophiliac

·     You have a recent acute joint injury – it should not be heated for at least 48 hours or until the joint erythema and swelling subsides.

·     You have any enclosed infections (Dental / joint or other tissues)

Consult your doctor before using the sauna, if you

·     Have any disease

·     Have Adrenal Suppression, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus or Multiple Sclerosis. It is not advised by some authorities to raise your core temperature

·     Are taking any prescription drugs – check with your pharmacist/physician Always check with your physician or pharmacist for possible interactions with a drugs affect due the use of an infrared sauna.
May be contraindicated for individuals with adrenal suppression,

 

6) Medical Information

A cocktail of harmful toxic chemicals was detected in every person tested in a cross-Canada study of pollution in people conducted by Environment Defense.

"The groundbreaking report, Toxic Nation: A Report on Pollution in Canadians, reveals that toxic chemicals, such as DDT, PCBs, pesticides, stain repellants, flame retardants, mercury and lead, are contaminating Canadians. Many of the chemicals discovered in the bodies of Canadians are associated with cancer, hormone disruption, reproductive disorders, respiratory illnesses and harming the development of children.

The report is the first in Canada to test for a broad range of chemicals in average Canadians from across the country, and it demonstrates that toxic chemicals contaminate people no matter where they live, how old they are or what they do for a living."

Test Results:

·      60 of 88 chemicals tested for were detected, including 18 heavy metals, five PBDEs, 14 PCBs, one perfluorinated chemical, 10 organochlorine pesticides, five organophosphate metabolites, and seven VOCs

·    Of the 60 chemicals detected:

o        41 are suspected cancer-causing substances,

o        53 are chemicals that can cause reproductive disorders and harm the development of children,

o        27 are chemicals that can disrupt the hormone system, and

o        21 are chemicals associated with respiratory illnesses

Information About Each Colour:

Red is recommended for treatment of impeded circulation, muscles and heart.

Yellow stimulates clarity of intellect, as well as toxin processing and elimination. It can help with learning disabilities and with strengthening of the endocrine functions.

Green is a cooling, sedating colour which helps reduce swelling of joints and tissues; it calms the body and helps reduce inflammation.
